Succulents, as with any plant, need the right lighting.  They like bright indirect light, not the hot direct sun.  And too much heat can cause damage too. 

Sunken brown or white patches developing on the succulent mean heat damage.  The green chlorophyll is destroyed where the tissue is overheated.  Intense heat can cause the damage, even if the plant is not in direct sunlight.
