Yippee, Skippy!  No more chattering teeth or freezing noses!

Yes, I feel bad about my dad’s blood-curdling scream in the middle of the night, but that is in the past, as they say.

What matters now is that the heat is on and my mom, my dad, and me (including my nose) are all toasty warm!

COLUMBUS’ Father:

I don’t care what you’ve discovered, Christopher.
You could have written.

It’s our ‘Clear the Benches’ Sale!

Come and get ‘em!  Starting Thursday, October 9, our remaining outside inventory of perennials, trees and shrubs will be 40% off.  Take advantage of our selection while it lasts.  Now is a great time to pick up the perennials, trees and shrubs you’ve had your eyes on all season.

This sale applies to existing stock only (no special orders), and no warranty is included with this sale.  All sales are final.

This 40% sale does not apply to previous purchases.  Annuals and tropicals are not included.  Fall mums and asters are not included in this sale.

Don’t miss out on Scarecrow Days!

David & Kelsey show off their scarecrow to their grandparents!

Scarecrow time is winding down at America’s Best Flowers (Cottage Grove location).  We are stuffing straw from 10-5 this Thursday and Friday and 10–4 on Saturday & Sunday.  This event ends this Sunday, Oct. 12, so don’t miss out.  There is a nominal fee for the scarecrow kit and garage-sale prices for scarecrow clothing (or bring clothes from home).

Set your lovely or scary creation on a straw bale, use a few corn stalks for background and surround the whole scene with brilliant mums, fountain grass and pumpkins, and you will have a fabulous fall display.

For groups of 5 or more, please call ahead 608-222-2269.  This will allow us to plan ahead and have enough staff available for your group.

Road construction ahead!

The corner of Cottage Grove Rd (Hwy BB) and Vilas Hope Rd will be a mess for a while.  At that intersection, Cottage Grove Rd is being widened to add a turn lane in both directions.   We ask for your patience during this time period.

We’d like to believe that any slight delay you experience is worth the trip out to our greenhouse.

Bulbs-A-Plenty!

We received a phone call the other day asking if we still had a good selection of bulbs and our answer was, ‘Yes, we sure do!’

Stop on out and pick up more of your favorites and maybe even try a few different ones.

How many men were born in 1996?
None, just babies were born!

Air Plants

It’s like magic!  These little beauties grow without soil!  I know!  It’s weird, isn’t it?

Air plants get all of the water and nutrients they need through their specialized leaves. They use their roots only for attaching themselves to rocks, trees, shrubs, and the ground.  How cool is that?

They are so easy to grow and maintain.  In fact they’ve been known to thrive on a little neglect.  So, if you are one of ‘those’ that unintentionally, of course, do this, well, this may be the absolute perfect plant for you!

Yes, We Have Other Houseplants

Did you know that the peace lily is one of the best household plants for reducing indoor air pollution?   This easy to care for plant helps to breakdown and neutralize toxic gases like formaldehyde and carbon monoxide.  Wow, it’s not only lovely to look at and easy to care for but this plant is good for your health!

Houseplants benefit us in so many ways.  Often chosen for the color and texture they add to a room, houseplants are a beautiful addition to any home.  Nothing helps create a pleasant, relaxed mood faster than the addition of a few plants.  Research has shown that the benefits of indoor plants go far beyond decorative, proving that people living in homes and offices with plants have fewer problems with stress-related illnesses.  The group also had lower blood pressure than those living without plants.

Stop out today and pick up several for your home and office.

These are actual quotes of what people said in court, word for word:

Q: She had three children, right?
A: Yes.
Q: How many were boys?
A: None.
Q: Were there any girls?

Q: You say the stairs went down to the basement?
A: Yes.
Q: And these stairs, did they go up also?

Q: Is your appearance here this morning pursuant to a deposition notice which I sent to your attorney?
A: No, this is how I dress when I go to work.

Q: The youngest son, the twenty-year old, how old is he?

Q: Were you present when your picture was taken?

Q: How far apart were the vehicles at the time of the collision?

Q: You were there until the time you left, is that true?

Q: So the date of conception (of the baby) was August 8th?
A: Yes.
Q: And what were you doing at that time?

We recently started to carry food products from Bald Eagle Foods at our greenhouse and our staff is raving about the Black Bean and Corn Salsa.  The word is that it’s not only perfect for taco Tuesday, but it’s great for any day of the week. Enjoy the mixture of black beans, corn, peppers, tomatoes, onions, garlic and spices for dipping or for seasoning that special recipe.  This salsa is cholesterol free and low in carbohydrates.

Take your burritos, tacos or corn chips to a hotter level with the southwest recipe of the Grizzly Bear Hot Salsa.   It’s sure to make your eyes water!

Cherry Tomatoes

It’s hard to beat the luscious taste of the cherry tomatoes that we grow at our greenhouse!  Come on out and sample one for yourself.

They are so sweet and juicy you’re going to want to pick up a separate container of them to enjoy on your way home.

Easy Money for Your Non-Profit Organization!

Is your non-profit organization in need of funds?  America’s Best Flowers fundraising program begins this fall on October 1 and runs through April 1, 2015.  We have designed it to be quick, easy, and profitable.  In as little as 2-3 weeks or less, you can earn substantial money for your group.

What else makes our fundraiser so special?

2.    Our gift cards are valid at both our Cottage Grove and our Edgerton locations!
3.    America’s Best Flowers gift cards NEVER EXPIRE!

Offer your customer that perfect gift to give for the holidays or any occasion.  To help promote your fundraising efforts be sure to advertise that an America’s Best Flowers gift card may be used to purchase items for the coming holiday season.  We will have beautiful poinsettias, Christmas trees, decorated and undecorated fresh wreaths, holiday hanging baskets, Grab and Go Porch Pots, and much more for your holiday decorating needs.  Many non-profit groups have told us that ‘America’s Best Flowers gift cards almost sell themselves!’

How do you get started?  One way is to take orders for our gift cards.  Your customers make payment directly to your group.  Submit your completed order to us and we will process it.  One check, from your organization, for payment of 75% of the total order will be due when you pick up your gift cards.  Another way is to purchase, in bulk, several different denominations of gift cards to sell at your organization’s activities.  One check, from your organization, for payment of 75% of the total is due when you pick up your bulk order.  Some groups do it both ways!

All holiday orders must be placed with us on or before Monday, December 15.  The cards will be available for you to pick up in a few days time.  Your orders may be submitted weekly, or all at one time.  If you need a gift card after December 15 just give us a call and we will make arrangements with you.

The Water Pistol

My five year old son squealed with delight when he opened his birthday present from his grandmother. It was a water pistol. He promptly ran to the sink to fill it.
"Mom," I said. "I’m surprised at you.
Don’t you remember how we used to drive you crazy with water pistols?"
My mom smiled and said, "Yes, I remember."

Flea Market

Clean out your garage, basement, and cupboards and bring your treasures out to our last 2014 Flea Market on Saturday, October 18, from 8-3.

This will be an indoor flea market.  Inside space is limited and vendor space is smaller. This inside area is toward the back of our main greenhouse, so vendors will need to transport their items on carts, which we will provide.  We do not allow vehicles inside the greenhouse.

Rain or shine! Set up time is at 6:30 am and the starting bell is at 8.  This event will end at 3.  Vendors will need to bring their own furnishings, tables, chairs, etc.

very limited number of 6 ft. long steel mesh top tables are available if you need a display table. Tables are on a first come first serve basis and you are responsible for covering the steel mesh top. Your display and products MUST fit with-in your designated area. After unloading your vehicle it must be moved to the designated parking area for vendors.

Our Kitchen

I am always amazed at how gardeners just keep on giving.  Last week Judy walked up to my desk holding a small container and said, “I brought you lunch.”  Now I ask who, besides a gardener, would make enough zucchini casserole to feed their friends.  If you’re thinking not another zucchini recipe, I suggest you be open-minded and give it a try.  I’m betting you’ll agree this low-carb, gluten-free meal is delicious.

Zucchini Pizza Casserole

  • 4 c shredded zucchini
  • ¾ t salt
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ c grated parmesan cheese
  • 2 c grated mozzarella cheese
  • ½ green pepper, diced
  • 1# ground beef
  • ½ c diced onion
  • 2 c spaghetti sauce
  • 2 t Italian seasoning
  • 1 t oregano
  • ½ t basil
  • 1 c shredded taco-flavored cheese
Directions

Place grated zucchini in a colander, sprinkle with salt.  Let drain for 10 minutes, squeeze out moisture.  Combine zucchini with eggs, parmesan, mozzarella and green pepper.  Spoon into a greased 8×12 inch casserole dish.  Bake at 400 for 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, brown ground beef with onions (salt & pepper if you wish).  Drain.  Combine the ground beef mixture with spaghetti sauce and seasonings.  Spoon over baked zucchini mixture.  Top with taco cheese.  Return to oven, bake for 20 minutes at 350.  Serves 6-8.
