You’ll love your garden … It’s our promise!

Customer Appreciation Day

This Saturday, August 6 from 11 – 3

Flying Cow Pizza

We, the America’s Best Flowers family, would like to show our appreciation by serving you, our Loyal Customers, FREE pizza on August 6th.  What a fun day it will be!  Brett Buchanan from Flying Cow Pizza, will be our pizza man between 11:00 – 3:00.  Flying Cow Pizza is a portable brick oven on wheels.

So gather up the family and head on out to the country for lunch.  And since you’re coming out anyway, take a look at the list of items below we are collecting for the Dane County Humane Society and bring a few along.  What a sweet deal, we feed you, you feed the hungry cats and dogs.  We’re looking forward to a super fun day.  See you then!

It’s so hot that –
the birds have to use pot holders to pull worms out of the ground.

Refresh Your Gardens

While we can’t offer you an F5 key to click that will instantly refresh your gardens back to pre-heatwave grandeur, we can come close.  Even during the hottest of days our staff has worked very hard to keep our plant inventory in great condition.  Water hoses have run constantly for the past few weeks, so we have beautiful plants available for you to enjoy.  To give your landscape the quickest of makeovers, stop out today and pick up several pots of bright annuals.  Sit them around your flower beds and patio, and you will magically bring the colors of summer back to your gardens.  To make it even easier, all sizes of our summer annuals are Buy One Get One Free.

It’s so hot that –
hot water comes out of both taps

Be sure to check out our
OverPot ClearStockery Event

Our clearance pottery has been moved into the area in front of House 8 – straight in front of you when you come up the drive.  There’s quite a selection of sizes and colors with savings up to 50% off.  These often overlooked odd pieces make great additions to patios and landscaping, and with the crowds of pizza-eating people we expect this Saturday, they won’t last long.

It’s so hot that –
it’s noon, kids are on summer vacation,
and not one person is out on the streets.

Spirea added to the 40% Off List

Our entire selection of spirea have joined viburnum and rudbeckia on our 40% off list.  Spirea varieties include Goldmound, Magic Carpet, Neon Flash, Little Princess, Peppermint Stick , Norman, Tor and Dakota Goldcharm, a hardy favorite among northern gardeners.

Money will buy a pretty good dog,
but it won’t buy the wag of his tail.

Dog Days of Summer

Kickoff Saturday, August 20
FUNDRAISER for the Dane County Humane Society

America’s Best Flowers loves animals.  This month we are sponsoring a fundraiser for the Dane County Humane Society (DCHS) to support the less fortunate animals in our area.

Our paw-stomping start to a fun week will begin on Saturday, August 20th with a dog wash.  Volunteers from the DCHS will bathe dogs between 11:00 and 3:00. We are suggesting a $10 or larger donation which will go directly to the DCHS.

Tabby & Jack’s Mobile Grooming will roll in and trim up those doggie nails for $10 and will donate all proceeds to the DCHS.  Also, Talbot’s Photography will be here to zero in and snap a perfect picture of fluffy Fido!  Fifteen percent of Talbot’s proceeds will be donated to the DCHS.

In the main greenhouse, we have our wall of honor to man’s best friend.  Please send us a picture of your dog along with his/her name and age.  If your dog is a lucky rescue dog please include the name of the organization.  Also, please include your name (we’ll use only your first name on the wall of honor).  For protection against humidity we will need to laminate the picture.  You may either e-mail a picture to abfscimino@yahoo.com, or mail it to America’s Best Flowers, Attn: Shirley Cimino, Events Coordinator, 4311 Vilas Hope Rd., Cottage Grove, WI 53527, or drop it off.

We are currently collecting much needed items for the Dane County Humane Society.  Following is a list of their greatest needs at this time:

  • Cat litter—unscented and non-clumping
  • Bleach (liquid)
  • Laundry detergent (liquid)
  • Copy paper
  • Canned dog and puppy food
  • Canned, ground cat and kitten food
  • KMR Kitten Milk Replacer
  • Large spray bottles

Remember to mark your calendar for August 20th.   It’s clean dog day at America’s Best Flowers!

Is your tail wagging now?  Stay tuned…there’s more coming…it’s our promise!

Second Annual
Art in the Garden Event

Calling all artists!  America’s Best Flowers is searching for artists to exhibit at our annual Art in the Garden event on September 17.  This is a free event.  We currently have two booth sizes available; 6 x 6 and 6 x 12.  Do you or someone you know want to display your artistic talent?  Contact us for further information.

What happened when the dog went to the flea circus?
He stole the show!

If your travels take you down by Camp Randall Stadium, please take a look across the street at the plantings surrounding the new HotelRED.

We were fortunate to work with the owner and architect to provide the flowers for this incredible structure.  Let us know what you think.

Our Kitchen

If you’re like me, cooking and hot weather don’t go together very well. Trying to come up with something that didn’t require much cooking, last week we had a Taco Tuesday Potluck. Such a fun and easy thing to do. We just made a list of everything we needed and had people sign up to bring them. Most things are pretty basic – soft shell tortillas, chopped tomatoes, etc. But we have such good cooks, that something special always shows up. This time it was delicious homemade salsa and guacamole. The cooks kindly agreed to share their recipes. Hope you enjoy them as much as we did.

Robin’s Sister Carol’s Easy Mango Salsa

  • 2 mangoes, peeled, seeded and diced
  • 6 Roma tomatoes, chopped small
  • ½ red onion, diced
  • 2 ears corn, roasted
  • ¼ – ½ bunch cilantro, chopped finely
  • ½ jalapeno, diced finely – no seeds
  • juice of 1 lime
  • salt and pepper to taste
Directions

Begin by roasting ears of corn on grill, cool, cut kernels from cob.

Mix all ingredients. Refrigerate.

Jean’s Guacamole

  • 5 avocados, peeled and diced
  • 2 med tomatoes, diced
  • 1 big red pepper, diced
  • 1 bunch green onions, chopped
  • 1 jalapeno, seeded and minced finely
  • 1 lime squeezed
  • 2 T oil
  • 1 T Balsamic vinegar
  • Salt and Pepper to taste – Jean uses Kosher salt for better flavor
Directions

Prepare vegetables.  Combine lime juice, oil and vinegar.  Pour over veggies and stir.  Put avocado pits in guacamole to keep from turning brown.  Refrigerate – eat same day you make it.

Two middle-aged couples were enjoying friendly conversation.
One of the men asked the other,
“Fred, how was the memory clinic you went to last month?”

“Outstanding,” Fred replied.
“They taught us all the latest psychological techniques,
like visualization and association.
It was great. I haven’t had a problem since.”

“Sounds like something I could use.” said the first man,
“What was the name of the clinic?”

Fred went blank.
He thought and he thought but couldn’t remember.

Then a smile broke across his face,
“What do you call that flower with the long stem and thorns?”

“You mean a rose?.

“Yes, that’s it!”

Fred turned to his wife,
“Hey Rose, what was the name of that memory clinic?”

SEE YOU SOON!!!
