Gardening Season is Coming to a Close

America’s Best Flowers will not have retail hours for the winter season after Saturday, October 17. We will reopen for the spring season on April 1, 2010.  However, if you find you need anything to wind up this season, please give us a call at 222-2269 to arrange a time to meet us here.  We will be very glad to help you.

Keep us in mind for all your Christmas gift card needs.  Let us take the hassle out of Christmas shopping.  We can take orders over the phone and mail the cards wherever you wish. A gift card from America’s Best not only shows you care, but it gives the recipient a promise that spring really will return.

A pirate walks into a bar wearing paper towels wrapped around his head.

He sits down at the bar and orders some dirty rum.

The bartender asks. “What’s with the paper towels, buddy?”

“Arrrr” says the pirate.  “I’ve got a bounty on me head!”.

BONNIE’S KITCHEN

It’s always hard for me to come up with new breakfast ideas-especially since it isn’t my favorite meal of the day.  I KNOW it’s the most important meal, so I’m trying. Here’s a couple that I like.

Peanut Butter Banana Trifles

1 ¾ c plain low-fat yogurt

2 T smooth peanut butter

1-2 T honey

2 large bananas, sliced

2 c lightly sweetened multigrain clusters

In a bowl, whisk together yogurt, peanut butter, and honey until smooth. Divide half the yogurt mixture among 4 six-ounce glasses or custard cups. Top with half the banana slices and half the multigrain clusters. Repeat layers once. Serve immediately. Makes 4 servings.

Cranberry-Almond Cereal Mix

1 c regular rolled oats

1 c quick-cooking barley

1 c bulgur or cracked wheat

1 c dried cranberries, snipped dried apricots, or raisins

½ c sliced almonds, toasted

1/3 c sugar

1 T ground cinnamon

1/4 t salt

Fat-free milk, optional

In a large bowl, stir together oats, barley, bulgur, cranberries, almonds, sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Cover tightly and store at room temperature up to 2 months (stir or shake mixture before measuring).

For 2 breakfast servings, in a small saucepan, bring 1 1/3 c water to boiling. Add 2/3 c of the cereal mix. Reduce heat. Simmer, covered for 12-15 minutes or until cereal reaches desired consistency, stirring occasionally. If desired, serve with milk. Makes four 2/3 c servings.

Microwave Directions:

For 1 breakfast serving, in a 1 qt. microwave-safe bowl, combine ¾ c water and 1/3 c cereal mix. Microwave uncovered on 50% power for 8-11 minutes or until cereal reaches desired consistency. stirring once. Stir before serving. If desired, serve with milk.

Skeleton

I was helping a buddy of mine, who is an orthopedic surgeon, move into his new office, by using my car to help transport some of his office equipment.

I had decided to position his somewhat fragile display skeleton

by strapping it into the passenger seat of my car.

At one traffic light, the stares of the people in the car beside me caused me to roll down the window and explain, “I’m delivering him to a doctor’s office.”

The other driver leaned out of his window and commented,

“I hate to tell you this, but it looks like you may be a bit too late!”
