When the clock strikes midnight on Sunday, Sept. 22, autumn will officially begin. In recent years, I haven’t had much patience for hot weather, so as far as I’m concerned, I was ready to get the apple cider and pumpkin latte season started back in August. I’m already looking forward to oversized sweaters, leggings, and knee-high boots!
My love for Fall goes beyond the fact that I’m over dripping in sweat just walking to the mailbox. To me, Fall is nostalgic: It’s the only season out of the four that I can honestly say makes me feel like the best version of myself. Maybe that’s because it brings out the kid in me. We did more things as a family in Fall. When I was growing up, my family loved going to the Elegant Farmer out in Mukwonago every year for the frozen apple cider and apple pie baked in a bag. I would stealthily circle the cheese and fudge samples two or three times. We would come home with several gallon jugs of fresh apple cider. Every activity I can remember was outdoors with hot apple cider in a big mug, pumpkin or zucchini bars in our hands, and rolling around in piles of leaves with all my friends.
These days, Fall makes me feel good both mentally and physically. I realize it sounds a little corny, but when the leaves start to turn from that deep green to burnt yellow and crimson, it’s as if something shifts inside of me. It’s as though I’m an entirely different person, but I’m not; I’m exactly the person I was meant to be, and would like to be, throughout the entire year.
My mood changes for the better when the temperature outside drops down into the 50s at night. I usually start to decorate with bright colored Mums and Asters the minute the first leaf drops. I follow that up with switching over from lemonade to apple cider (which is yummy both hot and cold.)
I don’t know about you, but if you need me any time between now and Thanksgiving, I’ll be filling up my social calendar with wine tastings, apple-picking, pumpkin patches, cranberry festivals, fish boils, and the last of the bonfires- all wrapped in a cozy blanket.
I hope you will join us this Saturday for our Art in the Garden/Fall Festival. The Mums are starting to pop and our ornamental grasses are really amazing this year!
Until next time,
