I have had a lifelong fascination with hummingbirds. You can imagine my utter joy when I realized that we had a family of Ruby-Throated hummingbirds hanging around our Garden Center. I am certain we had 2 eggs that recently hatched due to the regular appearance over the last two months. A few days ago, the female was flying in circles around my head about 12 inches from my face and slowly lowered to stare me down. I held my breath and slowly smiled like a goofball. I softly whispered “Hi there!” and she flitted away.
What is it about this little bird that captivates our imagination? Hummingbirds seem like something out of a fairytale. There is something magical about their colors, shape and the way they move as if they are reminding us to seek out the magic in life. In addition, the hummingbird is like no other creature on Earth. I mean, they can fly backward, hover up and down, and go from flying at full speed to an instant stop!
It is also believed that hummingbirds will return year after year to the same feeders where they wore born. With that in mind, I rejoice in knowing we will see these little guys next year. Some scientists have documented that they will also stop at the same feeders along their route every year during their migration journey.
Have you ever been feeling a bit tired and depressed, when suddenly, a hummingbird flits into your view? And just then, you have completely forgotten what you were worried about? It’s as if the hummingbird was saying, “Hey, things aren’t so bad. Lighten up – just look at all the beautiful flowers and sweet things in life!”
Hummingbirds, in their seemingly carefree and happy flight, remind us to live in the moment and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. Also, because they often seem to appear out of nowhere, they remind us that joy is unpredictable and can often be just around the corner. In the end, hummingbirds are a reminder that our happiness lies within us. Take a lesson from the hummingbird and be inclined to accomplish what seems impossible, while keeping it light and enjoyable. Like the hummingbird, our spirits can begin to hover and soar as we follow our path of joy.
Until next time,
