Hello Edward,

Hi Santa,

We’re all here and sooo ready to party with you!  And I, Lady, volunteered to take the first ‘WATCH FOR SANTA’ shift.  I’m so excited!

Hey, by the way, our roof is really, really small so as the sign says there is safe ‘Reindeer Parking’ in the front yard for Rudolph and the gang!

And don’t worry, Santa, we know you can’t stay too long cause you’re on a tight schedule…we’re just gonna enjoy the time we do have with you!

Your forever friend,
~ Lady

Have you heard of Beyond Borders?
Here at America’s Best Flowers we strive to be good neighbors and friends to one and all. We try to accomplish this in several ways such as support of non-profit organizations or being good stewards of the environment. One of the other things we do is support the Fair Trade Federation.

The Fair Trade Federation is part of the global fair trade movement, building equitable and sustainable trading partnerships and creating opportunities to alleviate poverty. They seek to alleviate poverty by expanding trade that values the labor and dignity of all people. In other words, it supports organizations who treat their employees fairly and humanely.

At America’s Best Flowers, we carry products from Beyond Borders Inc. which has been a member of the Fair Trade Federation since 2007. Beyond Borders has beautiful metal artwork, hand-crafted by Haitian artists.

In Haiti, used 55 gallon drums are in abundance. Having been used as shipping containers, they are discarded and available everywhere. The artists break down these drums and use the metal as their “canvas”. Each piece is individually made using a chisel and hammer. The banging of hammers on the metal to sculpt the art and the clanging of metal on metal creates constant music. If you’ve ever heard steel drums play, you know the mesmerizing sound!

The artist draws the artwork out on cardboard and then uses chalk to draw the pattern onto the metal. They chisel, shape and smooth until they are satisfied. When complete, the artist chisels their name into the artwork. Each artist has their own style and many of the pieces you can identify the artist just by looking at it, much like you can a painting by Monet or VanGogh.

Haitian metal art saw its start with the development of a friendship between Georges Liautaud, a railway mechanic and DeWitt Peters, an American Quaker pacifist who had traveled to Haiti to teach English. Liautaud made iron crosses for burial sites in his home town of Croix des Bouquets. Peters established the Le Centre D’Art in Port au Prince and discovered Liautaud’s talent when he began searching for artists.
With encouragement from Peters, Liautaud began to create sculptures and his new-found techniques were then taught to other artists. He would continue to create art and teach others his techniques until he passed away in 1991 at the age of 92. Today, apprenticeship is the hallmark of Haitian metal art.
The story of this one artist, Georges Liautaud, is inspirational and serves as a reminder to everyone that each person has the potential to make a difference. This one gifted-man shared his talent with others and as a result, an entire community of artists has emerged that now provide food, shelter, schooling and other necessities for their communities.
The holidays are a time for generosity, kindness and joy. As we approach the new-year, let us reflect upon everything for which we are grateful and do what we can to make our lives and the lives of others, better.

Turkey and Strawberry Spinach Salad

Ingredients:

1 lb. asparagus spears
1/2 cup poppy seed salad dressing
1 tsp. finely shredded orange peel
1 Tbsp. orange juice
8 cups fresh baby spinach
2 cups sliced fresh strawberries and/or whole blueberries
3/4 to 1 lb. cooked turkey or chicken, cut into 1/2 inch cubes.
1/4 cup pecans halves, toasted

Directions:

1. Snap off and discard woody bases from the asparagus. Cut into 1-inch pieces. Cook asparagus, covered, in a small amount of boiling, slightly-salted water for 3-5 min or until crisp-tender. Let stand in cold water until cool; drain.

2. Meanwhile, for dressing, in a small bowl stir together poppy seed dressing, orange peel and orange juice. Set aside.

3. In a salad bowl combine asparagus, spinach, berries and turkey. Place on salad plates, top with toasted pecans. Drizzle with dressing. Makes 4 to 6 main-dish servings.
