Holiday Porch Pot Workshop
Saturday and Sunday, November 21st and 22nd
Ongoing throughout the day between 9am and 3pm
Join us this weekend for our Holiday Porch Pot Workshop. Come on out with your family or a group of friends and create a lifelong memory. Being together and laughing together! Isn’t that what life is all about?
You are welcome to bring in your empty container(s) from home or purchase a few from us. Our containers range from inexpensive plastic to high-end ceramic. We will provide FREE sand for your container or liner. (We recommend always using a liner in ceramic containers.) All porch pot accessories must be purchased from America’s Best Flowers and we ask that you do not bring in anything from home or from other suppliers. A minimum $10 purchase, per container, is required.
We offer bundles of assorted fresh greens as a base to start your container. Once you have arranged the greens, you can add to your container from our wide assortment of artificial picks and stems to accentuate your design.
Finished prices range from $35 to $150. It all depends on how large, how full, and how dramatic you would like your container to be.
As with all our workshops, you do the actual “planting.” Our experienced design staff will be on hand to assist with your design and arrangement.
What a creative, fun and easy way to decorate for the holidays.
If you can’t make it out this weekend just stop out to the greenhouse from Monday through Friday, between 9:30-3:30 and do your own porch pot creation. Please keep in mind that assistance will be limited outside of the workshop weekend hours.
Joining us again this weekend is the charming and deliciously wonderful SchoolGrounds Café. Their reasonably priced bakery goodies and hot beverages will be available during the workshop.
For more information on Gaston School Gallery and SchoolGrounds Café check out their website at Gastonschoolgallery.com.

A Football team was on the field during practice, when to their surprise; a big turkey suddenly walked up to the coach and demanded a tryout.
“Are you crazy,” hollered the coach, “we don’t give tryouts to turkeys.”
Before he knew it the turkey started dashing towards the football and made a fantastic catch.
“That was amazing”, exclaimed the coach “I have never seen anything like that! How much do you want for a year?”
“Don’t worry about money,” said the turkey, “let me just ask you something, does the season go past thanksgiving?!”

What does one do with antique wooden shutters that have been stacked in a garage for, well, who knows how long?
What a dilemma! Jim wanted to toss them out. Bev said, ‘Are you nuts? I’ll take them to the greenhouse.’
So, from a garage to our shed they traveled. Their future looked dark and bleak. Much time passed. As sad and forlorn as they were, these sweet pieces of history knew that some day, one day, someone would recognize their beauty and rediscover them. That once again they would have a re-purposeful life. Finally that day has come!
Our creative associates were inspired to bring these lovely examples of 100 year-old architectural history back to the present. Their dedication resulted in beautiful door or wall hangings that you will enjoy for years to come.
These shutters represent the past, the present and the future. Our supply of these revived shutters is very limited so be sure to stop out soon to choose the perfect one for you, a family member or friend.
“Honey!” screamed my husband from our bedroom, “you MUST check this out!”
“What is it?” I hollered back from the kitchen.
“You’re not going to believe what I found when I was drilling a hole through the wall! I found a secret stash of bottles!”
Just then my I heard my daughters’ voice hollering from the bathroom, “I’m trying to brush my teeth in here! Who the heck is drilling a hole through the medicine cabinet!?”

If you leave alphabet soup on the stove and leave, it could spell disaster.
With all the heavy cooking and eating coming up, I thought it would be good to have a quick, healthy recipe for this week. I asked Scott if he had a good one. Turns out he does. Here’s a nice vegetarian soup that will satisfy your appetite as it takes the chill off a damp evening. Enjoy!
Creamy Broccoli-White Bean Soup
- 1 head broccoli (1 pound), cut into florets, stems thinly sliced
- 2 T olive oil
- 1 yellow onion, diced
- 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
- 1 15-oz can cannellini beans, drained
- 2 ½ C vegetable stock
- salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 1 T pine nuts, toasted, for garnish
- ½ oz shaved Parmesan cheese, for garnish
Steam broccoli florets and stems until bright green and tender, about 3 minutes. Let cool slightly. Reserve 1/2 cup florets for garnish.
Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Saute onion and garlic until tender, 5-6 minutes. Add beans and stock, bring mixture to a simmer. Remove from heat and add broccoli; puree in batches in a blender until smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Garnish each bowl with broccoli florets, toasted pine nuts, and shaved Parmesan.
