By now you’ve probably figured out that it’s easier for me to write 5000 words than 50, but we know everyone is especially busy this week with the holiday and I have been encouraged to keep it short.  So here goes.

There is no question that perennials have become increasingly popular over the past few decades.  Their dependability and ability to provide a changing array of color throughout landscapes have caused many gardeners to favor them over annuals.  Recently, flowering shrubs are seeing a similar rise in popularity.  They, too, are extremely hardy, returning every year with a show of color.  Requiring nothing but an occasional pruning, these plants provide plenty of bang for your buck.  Now is the perfect time to buy.  This week you will enjoy 20% savings on all shrubs.  At this writing, we have a fairly good selection available, but that can change very quickly.  Come on out today..

PERENNIAL OF THE WEEK

Echinacea purpurea, Purple Coneflower

If you are in the market for a perennial to attract butterflies and birds, the purple coneflower is your answer.  This long-blooming, hardy plant is irresistible to them.  Coneflowers grow well in any sunny location with average soil.  Not fussy, they do well with minimum attention.  Coneflowers also make a wonderful cut flower, lasting several days in the vase.  Save 20% on this great perennial this week.

BONNIE’S KITCHEN!

You HAVE to have a burger on the Fourth of July. And what could be more patriotic than a red, white, and blue burger? Use rye rolls for a yummy change and pick up a package of American flag toothpicks at the local dime-store to put in the burgers. Serves 4

Red, White and Blueburger

1-1 ½ lb. ground sirloin (depending on how big you want them)

1 T Worcestershire

Handful chopped flat leaf parsley

1 minced shallot or 1 T minced onion

½ lb. crumbled blue cheese

Extra virgin olive oil for brushing on burgers, optional

Steak seasoning, or salt and pepper to taste

4 crusty rolls, split

Toppings of lettuce, tomato slices, and blue cheese dressing or mayo

Combine the first 4 ingredients, and divide meat into 4 equal amounts. When forming each patty, nestle a pile of blue cheese crumbles into the center of the meat, and gently form patty around cheese.

Brush with EVOO to prevent sticking to grill, if desired. Grill to desired doneness, and serve on split rolls topped with lettuce, tomato, and blue cheese dressing or mayo.
